Germain Lambert (1904 - 1983) was a persistent inventor over a period of 27 years, yet he made relatively few cars. Following service in the French Air Forces in Morocco and spell working at the La Buire factory, he set up on his own at Mâcon to make a small sports car powered by a Ruby engine with all-round independent suspension by traverse leaves. He gave it the name “Sans Choc” because of the smooth ride provided by the suspension. Very few were made. In 1929 he moved to Rheims where he built another design with similar suspension, but driving on the front wheels from a Ruby or Chapuis-Dornier engine. These were also called “Sans Choc”. In a catalogue issued in 1931 Lambert said that his cars were not, and never would be, made in large numbers. “We do not sell our car to M. Tout-le-Monde”. This was an understatement, for probably hardly any were sold at all. At least one low-slung coupe was built, and the catalogue showed two other body styled, a racer and a streamlined coupe. In 1935 The Light Car reported that Lambert had decided to put his car into production, after several years of experiments, yet in 1936 after advertising a “Baby Sans Choc” with single-cylinder 350cc Chaise engine and rear-wheel drive, he closed his doors.
In 1940 Lambert joined the ranks of those making small electric cars, producing a few examples of the Baby Sans Choc with electric motors. He also made a mill for flour and grain, a precision vice and a multi-spindle drilling machine. Profits from these inventions enabled him to continue with his first love, cars. After the war he moved again, to Giromagny in Belfort, and began his most productive era of car making, although his workforce numbered only eight men. His 6CV Sport, shown at the 1948 Paris salon, had an 1100cc 4-cylinder engine which he described as a Lambert-Ruby. He claimed to have obtained the manufacturing rights to the Ruby engine, but it is more likely that they represented the stock that he had acquired in the hope of going into production before the war. His pre-war originality had given way to a conventional beam front axle with semi-elliptic springs, and rear-wheel drive. The show car, almost certainly a one-off, had an unusual coupe body in which the voluminous front wings lifted with the bonnet, but the production cars from 1949 onwards were open 2-seater sports cars. These came in stark cycle-type wing from as the CS Grand Sport, or with more flowing lines as the Simplicia. Lambert also made one or two racing cars with which he competed in the Bol d’Or from 1951 to 1953. He also made a miniature “wall of death” racer for fairground use. The last new Lambert design, though not least car to be built, was a coupe called the Torino with Italianate lines which looked like a miniature Ferrari, built by Schmitt of Colmar in 1951. It was too expensive to sell and, like so many other Lambert designs, remained a one-off. In 1953 Lambert sold off all his assets at auction, apart from a few cars which he kept in small museum adjacent to café at Petit Arran, Parly, about 160 km south east of Paris, which he ran until his death.
