In 1963 a group of six enthusiasts from Moscow - L.Durnov, I.Durnov, V.Eltyshev, E.Molchanov, A.Syvorotkin and F.Haidukov - decided to build a small serie of their own sportscar. The cars, called KD, used the basis of ZAZ 965 ‘Zaporozhets’ - they have shared engines, front and rear suspensions, steering, wheels and tires. The bodies were designed by Eduard Molchanov and didn’t remind any of the Soviet cars, although such details as front and rear windows, body frame, door handles and window regulators were borrowed from production cars. Five fiberglass bodies were made of fiberglass using a self made matrix. ZAZ 887cc engine was placed behind the driver and giving out 23hp let the 500kg car reach 120kph. The front end became the place for a 35-liter fuel tank, accumulator and spare wheel. KD had similar dimensions with it’s donor - ZAZ 965. They’ve had the same front and rear track (1140 and 1160mm accordingly) and wheelbase of 2030mm. But still KD was longer (3725mm against 3330mm for Zaporozhets) and wider (1450mm against 1395). At the same time it was much lower - 1170mm against 1450mm for ZAZ. Being designed as a city car, KD had a 150mm clearance. Fuel consumption was also rather low - 6-7 liters for 100 kilometers. The interior has been done in 2+2 composition.
Today one of the five cars belongs to Autoreview magazine museum in Moscow.
