Participants hardly recollect those old events: laboratory of sports automobiles at a plant after the name of Likhachev (nowadays AMO “ZIL”) was closed more than 30 years ago. Its employees then had no time for memoirs - they did not write about unique machines in detail, did not conduct the chronicles of their victories and defeats. And their age... One of the main characters of this history Boris Nikolayevich Kurbatov has celebrated his 90 anniversary nowadays. He was one of those “ringleaders” who stood at the origin of ZIS sports team. Kurbatov's first racing car was bulky ZIS-101. At the end of 1930s ZIS-101 along with serial “M” models and few in number sports machines on their base, participated in so-called linear races. For this purpose a site of highway in several tens kilometers was chosen, in the end of it sportsmen turned around and rushed back to a line “start – finish”. Near Moscow they drove on the Minsk highway, making a loop in Kubinki area.

Motor racing in 1930 was popular in the USSR almost like aircraft. Races were considered to be a part of military training; therefore they were encouraged by the leaders of the country, propagandized in newspapers and magazines. And, certainly, the director of ZIS Likhachev I. was very dissatisfied, when the plant’s team with the driver Kurbatov dropped out of a race because of the fused loose leaves. It was then when they started to prepare machines for competitions more or less seriously.

In 1951 ZIS-112 made its debut with avant-garde body of designer Valentine Rostkov. He was inspired by the well-known prototype “Beik-Le Seibr” (called in the USA “automobile- dream”). Futuristic two-seater ZIS with a metal removable cap above interior and the only headlight crowning round coating of a radiator, was painted in white and dark blue colors. They also became traditional for a plant’s team.

First ZIS-112 (the car was called “Cyclops” at a plant) was equipped with serial 140-strong eight-cylinder motor of ZIS-110. Then designers under the direction of Vasily Fedorovich Rodionov created the experimental engine with the upper admission valves and lower exhaust valves. The power output of the engine could reach 186 h.p., and the automobile could make about 200 km/h and had the length almost 6 meters.
