Jei manęs atmintis neapgauna, tai berods labai panašų Edselį kaip kad DDU esu vieną kartą matęs Vilniuje, "truputį užgesusį" ties Mindaugo tiltu...

Atrodo dar viena amerikietiška markė keliauja į istorija. Štai šiandien gautas pranešimas...įkeliu...

Hi Gintas,

Mercury RIP

According the today's issue of the Wall Street Journal, sometime next
week Ford Motor Company will announce the withdrawl of the Mercury brand
from the automotive landscape.
The brand was the brain child of Edsel B. Ford and was considered a
strong brand through the 1940's to the 1990's. However, slower sales
(partially due to limited budget concerns) gave plenty of fuel to
discontinue the brand. Sales started to slump in the late 1990's and
there was talk as early as 2001 about the brand going away. The Sable
was discontinued in 2009 and rumor is that the Moutaineer and Grand
Marquis will be gone by December of this year. Other Mercury brands will
probably be discontinued including the Milan and Mariner.
Like the Edsel at the time of its demise there was talk of a new compact
being readied as a Mercury, a special verion of the popular new Focus.

Sales in 2000 had been 359,143, for 2009 92,299. RIP Mercury :(

Mercury's End Means New Life For Lincoln
Joann Muller, 06.02.10, 6:25 PM ET

DETROIT -

Since the day he arrived at Ford Motor in 2006, Chief Executive Alan Mulally has been focused on trying to strengthen the company's namesake brand around the world. Now he wants to do the same with its luxury Lincoln line.

The automaker said Wednesday it will expand its Lincoln lineup with seven new or redesigned models, including a new small car. At the same time, Ford confirmed rumors that it will kill its ailing Mercury brand by the end of the year.

Analysts say the carmaker ought to be able to hold on to most of its customers since Mercury cars are usually just gussied-up Fords. According to automotive researcher Edmunds.com, 46% of Mercury shoppers also have Ford on their shopping lists. (Chevrolet and Honda vehicles are their other choices.)

Lincoln, meanwhile, needs a shot in the arm, notes Edmunds Chief Executive Jeremy Anwyl. "Lincoln doesn't have much to excite us today, but if the new resources directed to the brand help replicate the turnaround of Ford, Lincoln will be in good shape within a few years," he says.

Ford's president of the Americas, Mark Fields, said the time was right to kill Mercury and concentrate the company's product development resources on rebuilding Lincoln.

Mercury was conceived in the 1930s by Henry Ford's son Edsel as a premium brand poised between Ford and Lincoln. For years it was an important source of incremental sales. But in the last few years, as the Ford brand has improved, customers have been migrating away from Mercury to Ford. (One reason is that Ford starved Mercury of fresh products.) While Ford's market share has grown 2.2 percentage points so far this year, Mercury has stayed flat at about 0.8%. Lincoln's market share is about the same as Mercury's.

Today's Mercury customer is almost identical to Ford's, Fields says, and the pricing and profit margins are about the same too. The people who buy Mercury vehicles tend to be fleet buyers or those using employee or "friends and family" discounts--customers who could be easily satisfied with Ford vehicles instead, he noted.

Ford would not say how much it will cost to discontinue Mercury--including payments to dealers who will lose the franchise--but said the company is healthy enough to absorb the short-term costs. Ford still expects "solid profitability and positive cash flow" in 2010.

Ford has tried before to strengthen Lincoln, especially after General Motors spent heavily over the past decade to turn around its Cadillac luxury marque. But because Ford had other luxury brands to support, including Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo, those efforts tended to be half-hearted.

Ford has since sold those other luxury brands, and says it will focus all of its attention on expanding Lincoln and further strengthening its Ford brand.

Lincoln currently has six models in its lineup, but the Lincoln Town Car is being discontinued. Its flagship is the MKS large sedan. Other models are the Lincoln Navigator full-size SUV, the new MKT seven-passenger crossover and MKZ mid-size sedan, which was recently refreshed.

A hybrid version of the MKZ will go on sale later this year. The five-passenger MKX crossover will also be refreshed later this year. It will be the first vehicle to feature the company's new communication technology, MyLincoln Touch, which will be available on all Lincolns.

Over the next four years Lincoln will introduce six new or significantly redesigned vehicles, including its first compact car. Ford showed one potential design of the so-called Lincoln C-car concept earlier this year at the Detroit auto show.

In an effort to differentiate the brand from the more mainstream Ford, Lincoln will have its own engines, including a new V-6 engine, and fuel-efficient transmissions. Lincoln-only features will also include retractable glass roofs, adaptive computer-controlled suspensions and electronic push-button gear-selectors.

As it phases out Mercury, the carmaker said it will move to consolidate its Ford dealerships with Lincoln-Mercury stores. About 1,700 Mercury dealers are affected. Of those, 925 already have Ford and Lincoln franchises. Another 511 are Ford-Mercury stores. There are 276 Lincoln-Mercury stores. In some markets they will become stand-alone Lincoln stores; in other cases the carmaker will either try to pair those dealers with nearby Ford dealers, or will compensate them to close their stores.

Cranston, R.I., car dealer Robert Tasca Jr., chairman of the Lincoln-Mercury Dealership Council, conceded some dealers will be hurt by the decision, but said it did not make sense to sell Ford and Mercury vehicles on the same lot. "When we look back at this decision, we'll see it was a hard one, but from a financial standpoint, it was the only decision Ford Motor Co. could make."

Senokai berašiau čia:

Visus "amerikonistus" pasiekė žinia, kad vakar 2011-01-04 18:00 val. mūsų laiku St.Thomas gamykloje nuriedėjo nuo konvejerio paskutinis Mercury Grand Marquis, sidabrinės spalvos. Tad po 72 metų gamybos Mercury pavadinimas atsidurė šalia Edsel, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Plymouth ir kitų.
Ilsėkis ramybėje.
