he Police, together with Air Raid Wardens (ARPs) were responsible for alerting the public of Northamptonshire to potential bombing raids during the Second World War.
To do this, special mechanical sirens were used. By turning the handle, special "horns" inside the machine with air-holes in them were caused to rotate at great speed, thus creating a deafening wailing noise, which changed in pitch the faster the handle was turned.
